Exciting stuff - New mini, Interview, oh my!

Hey guys, check it out! I've printed and assembled a few copies of my new mini, Diary Doodles. I'm pretty excited about it because it has the nicest production value of anything I've put out.

It's a quarter size mini at 104 pages. It's got a color cover with fabric tape over the binding (staples) and a super sweet checker pattern on the inside cover (because I'm a book nerd and I love it when people do that!).

Anyway, It's still got a few kinks to be worked out before I'm read to sell it but it should be up for sale sometime in January. I'll probably sell it for $6.

Also, more exciting, the interview for the Fabler blog that I was talking about back in this comic went live a couple of days ago. You should go check it out!

Love, love,

Fall

100 days

For the time being I've decided to discontinue my daily journal comic. I'm going to take the holidays off and see how I feel about them. I'm not sure if I will ever go back to a daily schedule - if I continue with it it will be much more sporadic. Whenever I feel like it kind of thing.

I just have too many other projects I want to pursue to keep this one up!
-----------------------------------------

Also, here's a little peak at the website I've been building for myself over the last week or so. It's definately still a work in progress but it's really starting to take shape. I want to start pursuing more illustration work in an effort to pursue another dream of mine - illustrating childrens books.

Wish me luck!

Sketch jam

Rhymin and mealin'

Have you heard the Punky Brewskies album? It's like James Kochalka superstar does hip hop. I can't be sure, but I think MC Motherfucker is responsible for that last panel. Lots of excessive use of the word Motherfucker. Makes me laugh!

Globalization

Speaking of which, you should check out Lee Reed's first EP that he has online for free, called Introductory Offer. My favorite song off this is Feast or Famine - Really great stuff if you like smooth political hip hop. Lee Raback was the lead singer for the legendary yet sadly defunct Warsawpack.

Edit: The first two panels in this comic make it suck. Oops.

Sketchy

----------------------------------------
Also, been playing with some nibs that I picked up a couple of weeks ago. These were just a couple of doodles I had lying around that I figured would be good practice. I was really reluctant to give the nib a shot, but I actually find it more enjoyable to use than a brush. So far, anyway. I'll keep plucking away with it.

Hope you like!

looking for work

After writing this I thought of Joe Decie... he's got this sort of really weird logic to his comics. You should go check them out!

Peanuts

---------------------------------------

I have always read Peanuts. It has always been in the newspaper. I, however have never actually enjoyed reading it. A couple of years ago, after reading something that Bill Watterson said about the strip, I gave it a real change - I read a couple of those Fantagraphics collections. Still, no go. I found them cute, but a little boring. I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. In issue 4 of Schizo Ivan Brunetti declares Peanuts as "The greatest postwar comic strip of all time" as well as "An epic haiku". How could I not give it another shot with such hyperbole from someone I admire so much?

So, the other day I picked up a copy of an old Peanuts collection from the sixties at a second hand store... and I was blown away. This time it really clicked for me. It's very heartwarming and sincere and at the same time it's utterly depressing. To me, reading Peanuts feels like reading a Jeffrey Brown comic. Vulnerable in its honesty. Good stuff.

I found it particularly funny to see the similarity between Charlie Brown and the way I represent myself in some of my comics. I'm kind of amazed that Peanuts hasn't been such a big influence on me. Going forward it likely will.

Ps. This comic is a total cop out and not nearly worth the tribute I am trying to pay. Forgive me, the next will be better.

"Life sucks"

Bah!

------------------------------------

This is going to be the back cover of the first collection of Diary Doodles. Still trying to work out the front cover composition but it will be in the same vein as this.

Hope you dig it!

Operation Kickass!

-----------------------------------------

Check it out! This is the inside cover for the first collection of diary strips I'm going to be putting out. My intention with these comics is to keep it up for a year. So, I will be publishing 4 in total corresponding with the seasons that the strips were made in. This one is going to collect everything up until December 20th clocking in at 104 pages of comics!

Comics! Comics! Comics! Comics!

Super duper Oliver day

You, dear reader, should go check out Olli's blog. He's so much better at this drawing thing than I am! While you're over there tell him that he's awesome! And not just because I said so! Because he is!

I creep out every single person I admire

I am horribly socially awkward. I don't know why but I find it excruciating to talk to people - especially if I admire them. I'm sorry if I creep you out! I'm nice! Really! I think! I hope!

Also, went to the Inkstuds interview with Dave Cooper today hosted by the beguiling. I hadn't seen much of Dave's stuff up until recently but I'm quickly falling in love with it. I just wish he was still making comics!

Monotony

Also, Check out the below video. It's a beautifully shot video tour of the Six flags theme park in New Orleans. It closed when New Orleans was hit by hurricane Katrina and has since been left abandoned. It feels very post apocalyptic and the Godspeed you! Black emperor music to accompany it certainly adds to that feeling.

This especially gives me the chills after working in a theme park for so long. It feels so familiar, yet so broken. Good stuff!

Titanic, Sharker

Also, Here's a piece of fan art I made for Sam Spina's mini comic, Sharker. I liked the design and the comic was awesome so I couldn't resist! Sam was kind enough to send me some of his comics, so you should go and check them out yourself (and maybe even buy a couple!) over here.

Depressing Comix

Lisa has been trying to get me to watch this video for weeks. I don't know why I didn't until now but it totally made my day. I watched it like, 4 times in a row. You should watch it. It's super touching!

Genesis

Crankypants

Cassettes

A couple of weeks ago I sent Chris Clavin some of my comics. In return he sent me an awesome package with a his new band Imperial Can's CD as well as a couple of split cassettes. It has been years since I've had a stereo so I to track down a tape player to listen to them. Really solid stuff!

I really like Chris Clavins solo songs because they feel more one off journal entries... only in songs. Not the kind of stuff that is played over and over but more put down on tape and forgotten. Really intimate songs.

Taxi Driver

Have you ever seen Taxi Driver? You should, it's great! It's one of my favorite movies for mood and atmosphere... a huge inspiration! Go watch it now! Preferably on the big screen!

Everything is fake

Turns out the prison was a set that was used in the film Chicago. Kinda neat.

Cry, Cry, Cry

Everything is beautiful

Super lazy weekend

We also watched this really awesome NFB film, The Necktie. It's one of the best animated shorts I've seen in a long time. Check out the cutout traditional animation in it... insane! Check it out!

[Edit] Lisa complimented me on my creative spelling of "Meringue" here. I actually tried to check it because I knew it had a weird spelling... but on google the first few results come back with the awful spelling I went with. Point is, yeah I know.

You know how sometimes you have this idea... then you try to put it down on paper and it doesn't quite capture what you wanted it to? yeaaaah...

Short on ideas Pt. 2

Speaking of ideas, I think it’s a good idea for my friend Catherine to make more comics. Check out this comic she posted today – it’s AWESOME!! You should go her how awesome she is!
